Cycling to Gdogs – Germany (Part 1)

Having quickly passed through France, Belgium and Luxembourg, Germany was the next country for me to cross. In terms of pure road cycling it’s not the most pleasant experience. The roads connecting towns are fast, busy and often have no hard shoulder (which I had become accustomed to in France). German drivers just seem to want to get from A to B as quickly and as efficiently (in true German style) as possible. The speed and how close they passed made me a little nervous.

Cycling to Gdogs – Belgium & Luxembourg

The roads out of France across the Ardennes and into Lorraine were great. Fast, smooth and very picturesque. It was a Sunday too so fairly quiet in terms of traffic. However, once I left France, southern Belgium was a big disappointment. Very industrial and lacking any type of character. It seemed to smell of asparagus too. It was nothing to write home about so I churned through the 50km of Belgium quickly to get on to Luxembourg in the hope it would be more interesting.

To get across France I first had to get out of London and across the English Channel. The day before I left it had been 32C and sunny skies. The day I left had tropical thunderstorms and heavy down pours. Not the ideal start.

Cycling to Gdog’s – The Plan

In January 2011 I only had a slight itch to quit my job and go travelling, but no real plan to. With my landlord wanting his house back, in February 2011 I decided I would quit my job and go backpacking to Australia. The idea was to pass via train through Scandinavia into Russia, cross Russia to China, then venture my way down from China through south-east Asia towards Australia. The overwhelming urge to cycle the whole way took over and my plans changed once again.
