Huddle v2 Launched

At last we’ve released Huddle v2. A vast improvement on the older version, with a completely new UI, more functionality, and far better usability (excluding accessibility). There’s plenty more to come to, and some rather cool technologies, Microsoft MVC, OpenRasta, OpenAuth, improved REST services and more…

Here’s an article from Huddle’s blog detailing the changes a bit more.

OpenSearch for Huddle

I’ve been playing around with OpenSearch recently (the search box in the top right of your browser if you use Firefox or IE7). I thought I’d implement it for Huddle as it’s quite a useful feature.

It’s actually quite easy to do and there are plenty of articles. I’d recommend starting with this article.

Here’s the search plugin for Huddle. You just need to click it to install it.

Linux Mint 6 Install

Linux Mint 6 has recently been released.

It’s now my distro of choice over Ubuntu. I find it a little more stable, it comes with all the codecs/flash/java pre-installed (not a biggy, but handy), the package selection is more to my liking, and I like the design/theming.

Here’s my install script for my Dell XPS M1330.

Using FreeNAS

I’ve recently dumped my Ubuntu Server, and installed FreeNAS on my home server.

Ubuntu Server was great, but a little more than I needed. And in comparison, FreeNAS was far easier/quicker to install and setup. Plus I don’t have to go through the hassle of getting Ubuntu to leave the NIC in a wake-able mode (for Wake On Lan, which it doesn’t by default).

So far I’ve been very happy with it. I’ve got schedules set for when it turns on and off, rsync, ssh, samba shares, and user permissions setup.

One problem I did have was mounting my EXT3 drives. In the end I gave up and switched them across to the UFS. All I have to do now is order a new case, and set up remote access along with rsync cron jobs.

UPDATE 12/09/2008 – I’ve now actually switched away from FreeNAS. See my article Goodbye FreeNAS, Hello Ubuntu Server.

Chilli Fives

Sunday night is curry night. We always start of with a pint of cider and the local “nasty” pub before moving on to the curry house.

Firstly, what is “Fives”? I found an article on Bar Meister that saves me trying to explain it.

However, instead of the loser seeing off a drink, they have to eat a piece of chopped chilli. One of us will order a very spicy dish with chopped chilli (usually the bird eye chilli’s). The rules are:

  • 10 proper chews, 5 on each side of the mouth. They have to be counted.
  • Each person has to do at least one. We had occasions when Ed was so bad at Fives, that he would lose every game.
  • No yogurt drinks

It’s great fun. We’ll no doubt be coming up with a few more curry games. I’ll keep them posted. We do all of our Chilli Fives at:

Taj Mahal, 150 Upper Richmond Road, London, SW15 2SW

An excellent curry house if you’re ever in the Putney area. I recommend the chicken Jalfrezi.
