Linux Mint 5

Having been an Ubuntu user for a few years now, I decided to try a version of Linux based upon Ubuntu.

The best distribution I came across was Linux Mint. It’s currently based upon Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron). The main difference is that it (against Ubuntu philosophy) includes non open source packages, such as codecs and the Sun’s JRE. It’s also a lot more polished than Ubuntu and looks, in my opinion, more attractive.

Also the Upgrade Manager is far superior in Linux Mint to Ubuntu. It rates each upgrade as to how much of an impact it will make on the system. Very useful.

Unfortunately there isn’t a 64-bit version, so for now I’m just running it on my Dell XPS M1330 (as my Desktop has 4Gb RAM).

However, I’ve been very pleased with it. It’s Ubuntu, but changed slightly, and to my liking. It’s definitely worth a try if you’re new to Linux.

UPDATE – There is now a x64 bit version available on Linux Mint 6.
